Radiotherapy An Underrated Cancer Tool

A report, written jointly by Cancer Research UK and National Health Service (NHS), states that, although advances in radiotherapy treatments are being made, "the pace at which innovations have been adopted across the NHS has been inconsistent, leading to inequitable access to these services for patients." In addition, "more needs to be done to achieve the guarantee set out by the prime minister to deliver innovative radiotherapy treatments."

However - the report itself and the concern it has sparked about access to radiotherapy services are a testament to the importance of the therapy in the clinical oncologist's armamentarium. Radiotherapy can cure cancer; it is "second only to surgery in effectiveness," Dr. Barrett said.
