The median isn't the message

The Median Isn't the Message by Stephen Jay Gould - a personal story of statistics and cancer.

Stephen J Gould, was a leading evolutionary biologist on the faculties of Harvard and New York University. He was diagnosed with abdominal mesothelioma in 1982, and found out through his research into the disease that the “median” life span for someone with abdominal mesothelioma was 8 months. As a professional scholar and researcher, however, he knew that such statistics could be misleading. To give context to such grim statistics to other cancer survivors, he wrote the following essay. He died in 2002 at the age of 60 — 20 years after his original diagnosis, and from a different type of cancer altogether.
