ARO selected as Australasian Training Site for Symmetry

Symmetry™, Elekta’s Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) software solution, allows for uninterrupted patient set-up and treatment delivery, and is ideal for hypofractionated and Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SABR/SBRT). It uses unique anatomically correlated 4D image guidance at the time of treatment to give volumetric visualization of respiratory motion and the ability to correct for baseline shifts.

This advanced imaging technology enables improved tumour volume targeting and dose conformance as well as reduction of radiation dose to healthy tissue, especially for hard to treat and moving tumours such as those in the central nervous system and lung.

Auckland Radiation Oncology was an early adopter of the Symmetry technology and there is a demand from the region for training in this area, to further improve patient outcomes. The staff, including radiation oncologists, physicists and radiation therapists, has led the clinical use of this technology at ARO.
The team at ARO are therefore delighted to be hosting these Symmetry training courses which will be attended by radiation oncologists, radiation therapists and physicists from around the Asia/Pacific region. The first course will be held on the 7-8th of November 2014.
Typically the courses will take place over a Friday and Saturday allowing attendees to see the treatment being used clinically as well as allowing for practical hands-on sessions to familiarise with use of the equipment and related procedures.
