Study compares CyberKnife and Traditional Radiation Treatments for Prostate Cancer

Wed June 11th 2025

Did you know treating prostate cancer with CyberKnife typically involves just five treatment sessions?

You might wonder: Can a shorter treatment be as effective as the traditional approach, which involves up to 40 sessions over 6 to 8 weeks? You're not alone. Leading oncology experts asked the same question and answered it through the PACE A trial.

This large international study followed 874 men with localised prostate cancer. One group received SBRT/CyberKnife treatment - five high-dose sessions over 1–2 weeks. The other underwent traditional radiotherapy - up to 39 treatments across seven and a half weeks.

The results
At the five-year mark, patients treated with CyberKnife had outcomes that were as good or better than those who had conventional treatment, with similarly low side effects and no increased cancer recurrence or mortality.

For many patients, fewer treatments can now mean more time living life, and less time in treatment. Read more about the PACE A trial here. https://aucklandradiationoncology.co.nz/news/CyberKnife-Pace-A-trial
