The Weave of Care: A Symbol of Connection and Reciprocity
Wed Oct. 8th 2025
As we prepare for the official opening ceremony for our new North Shore facility this week, we’re proud to share a special feature that speaks to who we are and how we approach our work.
Engraved into the exterior of the building, The Weave of Care is more than artwork – it’s a reflection of our values, a visual narrative of who we are and how we work.
Inspired by the whakataukī Ko au ko koe: Ko koe ko au - I am you, you are me, the artwork embodies the principle of Tuākana–Tēina. This traditional concept speaks to the reciprocal nature of learning, guidance, and care - where knowledge flows in both directions, and each person has something to offer the other.
In a healthcare setting, these values are at the heart of how we engage with every patient and whānau. For us, the Weave of Care represents the strength of the relationships, which are based on mutual respect, empathy, and trust, between our people, our patients, their whānau, and the partnership between our founding organisations, Allevia Health and Southern Cross Healthcare.
Like the threads of a weaving, each line in the design is unique, yet each depends on the others to create a strong, unified whole. Together, they symbolise that care is not a one-way act, but something we create collectively, through connection and collaboration.
The Weave of Care was created by Joseph Stafford, Allevia Group Manager – Equity and Customer Experience, whose vision was to embed these values into the very fabric of our new facility, so they are seen and felt by all who walk through its doors.
